February 2-6, 2026

No snow this week! Could it be early Spring?

February 2 was Groundhog Day! This fun tradition is based on the idea that a groundhog can predict the weather. If he sees his shadow, we expect six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, an early spring may be on the way. On Monday, we watched our local groundhog, Balzac Billy, from Blue Grass Nursery. Take a look at our groundhog drawings to see why we think we will have 6 more weeks of winter. Do our pictures show a shadow or no shadow?

We also enjoyed reading a story by Kathryn Otoshi, who uses numbers, counting, and colours to teach children about kindness, being unique, and standing up for each other. The story showed us how even one voice can make a big difference. After reading, students shared what they learned and drew pictures of their favorite parts. Some of their thoughts included.

“Red was being mean to blue.”

“You can say, ‘Stop! I don’t like that.’”

“Friends stick up for each other.”

“The colours turned into numbers.”

“We can be friends.”

It was wonderful to see students making connections between stories, art, and being kind to others.

Students created February self-portraits. This time, students worked on a blank page without a circle to guide the size of the head and face. This encouraged them to think carefully about body proportions and how to use the space on the page effectively. It was wonderful to see their growing confidence and attention to detail in their artwork.

Lunar New Year begins on February 17th. It is the year of the Fire Horse! We completed a directed draw of a horse and learned about traditions and customs of the Lunar New Year.  How many "gold coins" bring you luck? Next week our students will choose their number of "gold coins" and put them "inside" their red envelope in their journal.

As we approach Valentine's Day, we wanted to let you know that we will be exploring themes of friendship, love and kindness but we will NOT be exchanging pre-made cards or treats at school.

To make the most of our limited learning time, our class will focus on inclusive whole-group lessons and meaningful activities rather than individual card exchange.

Thank you for your understanding and support! 💕

Please do not send Valentine Cards or treats to school.
