This week we continued exploring how we are unique and began an art project based on the story “Perfectly Norman” by Tom Percival. We celebrated who we are and our special talents like “running fast, finding lost objects on the floor, dancing, singing, and kicking a soccer ball.” In the story, Norman has wings that helps him fly. He was scared to show his talent and hid it from his friends and family. We learned that it is important not to hide what makes us special, but celebrate what makes us unique.
Next, we used liquid watercolours to make our beautiful wings come to life! We will continue to work on this project in the upcoming weeks.
We took our science outside to observe the seasonal changes that happen in
fall...Do you know how to tell it's fall? We noticed that the leaves on the
trees are changing colors! Some trees lose their leaves, while others, like the
evergreens, stay green all year round.
Later in the week, we learned about the practice of gratitude. We read Todd Parr's "The Thankful Book" and sang some songs about being thankful (If You're Thankful and You Know It). Students responded to the story by drawing what makes them feel grateful and thankful. We completed our pictures with lots of bright colours like Todd Parr.
We read the book, "Giving Thanks- A Native American Good Morning Message." We then focused on the things in nature we are grateful for! Some ideas were: the moon, the rivers, animals, the ocean, trees, a leaf pile to jump in, snow to build with and many more!
MATH SORTING becomes making PATTERNS
In math, students used their sorting materials to explore
patterns using many different loose part collections in our classroom. Students
were given a challenge to create a pattern using the collections. Lots of
valuable conversations were had about what was a pattern and what wasn't a
pattern. Some children created simple, basic AB patterns, while other patterns
were a bit more complex. We also began looking at patterns around us including
the clothes that we wear. Encourage your child to use some objects at home to
explore pattern creation!
