This week, our theme is… LOVE!!
We have been busy reading stories, exploring math shapes and
patterns, and creating beautiful heart art as we learned all about love. We
asked some big questions:
- How
does love make us feel?
- How
do we show love?
- What
is a compliment?
In kindergarten, we work every day on building social skills like kindness, caring, and sharing. Showing love to our family and friends is an important skill that we will continue to grow and practice all year long — and throughout our lifetimes!
We had so much fun learning about a special robot named “Z” who was on a search to discover what “love” means. After hearing Z’s story, we created our own robots using different shapes. We counted the shapes in our robots and then used our own words to teach our robots what love means to us! Here is what some of our students shared:
Love is…
“hugging my family.”
“when my dad takes me to Calaway Park.”
“sharing food with my family.”
“playing with my brother and sisters outside in the snow.”
“helping people that are hurt.”
“when I give my mommy a kiss.”
“eating snacks with my friends at a sleepover."
We enjoyed reading Slug in Love about Doug the slug
who needed a hug. But who wants to hug a slug like Doug? Doug has a surprise
meeting with a lovely ladybird and learns that friends can be found in unlikely
places.
After our story, we created heart pictures using colourful
stickers and made patterns in our designs. Ask your child if they can show you
these patterns: ABAB // AAB
// ABC
We are becoming pattern experts!
We also read In My Heart by Jo Witek, which shows the
many feelings we carry inside our hearts. We talked about feelings like happy,
calm, sad, afraid, mad, silly, and more.
Inspired by the story, we designed our own heart art using
beautiful colours to show different emotions. Each heart was unique and special
— just like us!
