The Kindergarten Connection: SVS Team!: February 10-12, 2025

This week, our theme is...Love!!

We explored stories, math patterns, and the importance of kind words. We discussed how love makes us feel, how we express it, and what is a compliment. Building social skills like kindness and care for family and friends is essential, and our students shared their understandings of love through creative activities.

In Jessie Sima's Love, Z, a robot named Z discovers the meaning of love after finding a message from Beatrice. Inspired by this, students created robots from paper shapes and counted the shapes used. Here's what some of our students think "love" means.

Love is...

"hugging everybody."

"spending time with my family"
"when my grandma picks me up from kindergarten."
"helping people that are hurt."
"when I hug my mommy before bed."

We also read The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose, highlighting sentence patterns that repeat. Then we created heart pictures with coloured sticker patterns:

MORE Lively Letters!

Mrs. Sutherland introduced us to two more partner letters - "f and v." We are so excited to be reading words like "tap" and alien words like "vaf" using the "tap and sweep" strategy. Check in Google Classroom for videos to help your child practice!

On Wednesday, we celebrated the upcoming Valentine's Day with a whole-group activity focusing on love and kindness. Instead of exchanging individual cards, we fostered friendship and community through an inclusive activity about celebrating what makes us special and unique. Students shared compliments like:

"He plays nicely and shares legos with me."

"He takes turns on the playground."

"She helps me when I need help."

"I like her smile."

"He builds cool stuff like towers."

"She is my friend and we play together"
