December 9-13, 2024

 “More Gingerbread Fun and Creativity!”

This week we continued our sweet and crafty gingerbread journey! From reading more gingerbread cookie fairy tales, to crafting symmetrical houses, and measuring with our special gingerbread tape, we had a delightful week filled with joy and learning!

In "Ninjabread Man," our hero leaps and rolls to escape a sneaky fox. "Ka-pow! Hi-yah! And Shazam! You can't catch me I'm the Ninjabread Man!" Can you guess who saves him? We learned to draw a Ninjabread man without candies and decorations. We drew masks, belts and arm bands like icing sugar. And we added short, curved lines to show movement.

In Gingerbread Baby, the village searches for the playful, gingerbread baby, while Matti stays home planning to catch it with his new gingerbread house. Students predicted who would catch the baby. We had so much fun hiding our own gingerbread baby in our houses. We also explored symmetry - drawing identical shapes on both sides of the house, like a mirror!

Who is the Gingerbread Bear? This story had a clever park ranger, some campers and some wildlife friends working together to catch this yummy treat!  "Run, run, try if you dare! You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread bear!"

"Nine gingerbread men dance on the tabletop.
One sees some windup mice and decides to stop."

We explored the adventures of 10 gingerbread men, then used our gingerbread man measuring tape to compare lengths of classroom items. We practiced counting to 10 and measuring with non-standard units like paper clips, straws, snap cubes, and gingerbread men!

Gingerbread House Day on December 12th celebrates a fun family tradition for many across the country.

We watched a Mystery Science video exploring, "Can you build a house out of cookies and candy?" and learned about building materials. Gingerbread dough starts soft but hardens when baked, licorice bends like a bridge, and peppermint sticks are as strong as concrete. Ask your child what else to consider when building a house - like the weather!
