National Gingerbread House Day...Dec. 12
What if you could live in a house made of cookies and candy?
We continued to explore gingerbread in stories, science, and measurement this week!

The Ninjabread Man is a terrific twist on the original gingerbread man as he leaps, rolls, and tumbles to stay out of danger. "Ka-pow! Hi-yah! And Shazam! You can't catch me I'm the Ninjabread Man!" Who saves the Ninjabread man from the fox in this story?

We learned to draw a Ninjabread man without candies and decorations. We drew masks, belts and arm bands like icing sugar. And we added short, curved lines to show movement.

Gingerbread House Day on December 12 recognizes a family tradition for many around the country! We unveiled a very exciting house in our kindergarten class complete with windows, door, roof and the house number 123. The students will all have a chance to add decorations these next 2 weeks. Stay tuned for it's transformation! When it's finished, the children can visit inside.

We watched a video from Mystery Science that answered the question: "Could you build a real house out of cookies and candy?" What would you use to build your house? What are the properties of building materials? Gingerbread dough is soft and gooey but it gets stiff and strong when it is baked. Licorice bends like metal cable in suspension bridges. Peppermint sticks are strong like concrete columns. Ask your child what else they should think about in building.Hint: weather, sun, rain, snow.

The story Gingerbread Baby has a whole village on the hunt for the mischievous gingerbread baby. While everyone is out looking, the boy, Matti, is home making plans to capture the gingerbread baby with his new gingerbread house. Students made predictions to see who would be the one to catch the gingerbread baby!

We had so much fun hiding the gingerbread baby in our gingerbread houses. We also learned about symmetry...it's like looking in a mirror. What we draw on one side, we then draw it on the other side!

Who is the Gingerbread Bear? This story had a clever park ranger, some campers and some wildlife friends working together to catch this yummy treat!
"Run, run, try if you dare! You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread bear!"

And for some more math fun...

"Nine gingerbread men dance on the tabletop.
One sees some windup mice and decides to stop."

We read about the adventures of 10 gingerbread men. Then we used our own 10 gingerbread men measuring tape to find different items in the classroom that were shorter or longer than the paper strip.
I can count to 10.  I can measure and compare lengths using non-standard units such as paper clips, straws, snap cubes and...gingerbread men!!

We've also had lots of fun exploring some NEW Gingerbread Centres!
Thank you to a special family who made us some wooden Gingebread characters to play in our centres this week!
