A week of fall exploration and thankfulness!

Some of our work this week centred around seasonal changes that happen in fall...how do we know it is fall? What is happening to the leaves on the trees? What can we learn from the land?

We have been studying seasonal changes and noticing the vibrant autumn colours around our homes and the school. On Monday we read Lois Ehlert's "Leaf Man" and then used gathered leaves to design our own leaf person or animal...and imagining where the leaves might blow with the wind! Check out some of the work samples below!

In addition to our leaf studies, we have been hard at work exploring new math tubs and practicing sorting objects. We started this work with a book called "Sort it Out" to help us understand different ways we can sort objects in preparation for patterning activities next week; sometimes studens choose to use a sorting mat to make groups of items and sometimes they choose to work without a sorting mat- both ways are fine!

We also worked on the practise of gratitude...exploring how we feel grateful and thankful. We read Todd Parr's "The Thankful Book" learned some great songs about being thankful (If You're Thankful and You Know It) and also read the book, "Thanks for Thanksgiving."

Students responded to the stories and thought about why they feel grateful and thankful. We completed our pictures with lots of bright colours like Todd Parr.

We also read the book, "Giving Thanks- A Native American Good Morning Message."

We then focused on the things in nature we are grateful for! Some ideas were: the moon, the rivers, animals, the ocean, trees, a leaf pile to jump in, snow to build with and many more!

A plea for help!
Sadly, it appears that some of our classroom materials are leaving the classroom...this week we found a collection of items from our centre bins on the playground after our classes played outside and we've also had students in older grades returning items to our classroom that they are finding outside...perhaps these items are finding their way into the pockets of kiddos?

If you are finding that your child is brining home manipulatives/ toys/ materials that do not belong to them, please help them to return them! We know it is sometimes exciting to play with new toys and learning to leave special creations at school can be tough- we can certainly help!

We purchase many items for the classroom with our personal funds (or bring in toys that belong to our own kiddos) so we really appreciate your support to return items that might appear at home!

Some of the hot ticket items that have dwindled are little manipulatives called "plus plus" and magnet tiles...thank you!

NEW!! Our classroom now has an account within the Scholastic Reading Club!
We have no expectation for families to place orders, but wanted to share our class code just in case, as we can earn points toward book purchases for our classroom when families place orders!
Our classroom code is: RC210876
