"Everyone Counts!"

This week's theme was about numbers, colours, and how friends stick together showing kindness and standing up for each other.

Ten Black Dots is a book that focuses on the number 10. With each numeral, a picture is made. Each student chose their favorite number from 1-10 and created their own pictures using their black dots.

Kathryn Otoshi loves to count! Her favorite colour is red and her lucky number is 7. She uses numbers, counting, primary and secondary colours to help children learn about accepting each other's differences. Sometimes it just takes one voice to make everyone count! Our students shared their learning from the story and drew pictures of their favorite part.

"Red was being mean to blue."
"You can say, Stop! I don't like that."
"Friends stick up for each other"
"The colours turned into numbers"
"We can be friends."

Happy Lunar New Year! It is the year of the dragon!

We completed a directed draw of a dragon and learned about traditions and customs of the Lunar New Year.  How many "gold coins" bring you luck?  Our students chose their number of "gold coins" and put them "inside" their red envelope in their journal.

We made some connections on our way to the library! We spotted animals for Lunar New Year made by the Grade 5s!

What Does it Mean to Be Kind? It's easy to be kind in simple ways to show someone you care.  Ask your child one way they can be kind. Students completed their next self-portrait, "This is Me in February." See how we are adding more details to our drawings.

Science

PUMPKIN JACK is growing! Last fall we put Pumpkin Jack into a cozy home of dirt and left him to decompose this winter.  He woke up too early and he has sprouted some green stems. We are going to have to let him out to stretch out and give him a bigger pot to keep growing. We hope he will live inside until it is warm enough to plant him outside this Spring.

Lively Letters - a life changing strategy to hear, recognize, and say the letter sounds in our alphabet! We continued add more letters and introduced a "super star" that says its sound "louder" and "longer" than the others!! Ask your child about the "super star" and how to "tap and sweep" to read letters that make a word!!

The results are in! Our Indigenous art in the style of Norvan Morrisseau is complete and our beautiful artwork is on display on our bulletin board for the whole school to see! Check it out...
