April 8-12, 2024

Spring in Calgary has been challenging this month. We plan to do more "live" explorations of the changes we see, feel, hear, and smell as the snow melts and the ground begins to show new growth. So this week, we turned our attention to learning about "What is a Fact?" and we practiced our writing. We can write about facts that we "know for sure."

We explored different features and pages of the book, First Big Book of Why with science facts to inspire us to write from the "fact pocket" in our brains. Writers plan before they begin writing. See some of our planning ideas for fact writing.

"I know hammerhead sharks live in the ocean."
"I know pumpkins grow on vines."
"I know penguins are black and white."
"I know spiders make webs."

We read the story, "What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?" and learned some new facts about different animals.  After some great discussion, and reviewing our planning sheets, we continued our work on fact writing in our writing journals. We are really trying our best to write some of the sounds we hear.

Happy EID to our friends who celebrated this special occasion with their families this week.  Our students read the story "The Most Exciting Eid" and completed a journal entry sharing about one of their favourite family traditions and holidays.

In anticipation of our special guest "Lady Buggy" next week, we introduced the topic of bugs to the students to ensure no one feels afraid during the presentation. We are learning how insects are a very important part of our eco-system to help plants to grow. Students chose 3 bugs to draw in their visual journal and added labels to show what they know about them.

Exciting News!
"Lady Buggy" aka Georgia will be teaching us about bugs next week. She will bring in some of her real life 'pets' (bugs) to the classroom so we can learn more about their habitats, life cycles, physical attributes and more!

We know some kiddos will prefer not to touch the bugs during our special day with Lady Buggy and that is ok...but we will insist that everyone behaves in a manner that is respectful and calm!

Please log into your child's Powerschool account to pay the fee for this special activity!

Thank you to those who have already paid the fee. And  thank you to those who have volunteered to join us during the presentations.

Your child brought home a white form this week from Ken Stewart Photography that you need to fill in and return by Tuesday April 16th if you want your child to have a Spring photo taken!!

This is a fundraiser for the school that the photographer contributes based on forms returned....you do not have to purchase photos afterward.

If you do not return the form, the photographer WILL NOT take your child's photo. You do not have to purchase a photo package.

Kindies are going Swimming!!
Please check your child's backpack for an important YELLOW FORM that came home this week.

You must complete and return the yellow swim form.

Our lessons are the week of May 13-16th, 2024 and we will be looking for volunteers to join us as well. Stay tuned for more information after Lady Buggy!
